What are you working on?

Choose a field naming convention your crew can use

A good field name is short, recognizable, and stable. Pick identifiers people can say over the phone and find in the journal without guessing which piece of ground is meant.

Record field acreage with a clear area basis

An area figure needs context: total boundary area and workable cropped area can differ. State what your number represents before using it to interpret the season’s work.

Field notes or activity notes: where should a detail go?

Put enduring context on the field and dated work on an activity. This separates a lasting access issue from a temporary condition seen on one particular visit.

Log work on only part of a field

Identify the worked section explicitly when an operation does not cover the whole field. A field-linked entry by itself does not tell the reader how much ground was actually covered.

Document a field split so older records stay understandable

A split changes how future work is located. Preserve the original field’s historical scope and explain how the new sections relate to it before recording separate operations.

Keep clear records when two fields are combined

A combined working field needs a clear start date and a link back to the previous sections. Earlier records still describe the ground as it was managed at the time.

Organize records for leased fields

Record leased ground with the same location clarity as owned ground. Stable identities and explicit access context help prevent records from becoming tangled when arrangements or operators change.

Archive an inactive field while preserving its history

An inactive field can be removed from current working choices without erasing the reason it was used in earlier seasons. Explain the change before archiving so the history remains interpretable.

Use field history to find the last recorded operation

Read the latest relevant activity and its notes together. The most recent entry might be scouting or a partial pass, so it may not answer when a specific operation last covered the field.
