A practical checklist

  1. Choose acres or hectares deliberately when entering the field area.
  2. Note whether the figure covers the full parcel or the cropped portion.
  3. Record the source and date of a revised estimate when the difference matters.
Illustrative recordA worked example

Field area: 52 ac. Field notes: “Cropped area estimate from September boundary review; excludes shelterbelt and permanent pond. Legal parcel is larger.” A reader knows what the area includes.

What to avoid

Do not imply the stored area is a surveyed legal boundary. A practical working estimate and a legal land measurement serve different purposes.
