A practical checklist
- Write the split date and dividing landmark in the original field notes.
- Create clearly named new fields with their own areas and cross-references.
- Record future work under the relevant new section; preserve old whole-field activities as originally scoped.
Old “Home 80” notes explain that it became Home East and Home West at the lane in spring 2026. New fields reference Home 80 for pre-split history. A 2025 harvest stays attached to the original whole field.
What to avoid
Do not duplicate an old whole-field harvest into both new fields. That would make one original quantity look like two independently measured quantities.
