A practical checklist

  1. Expand unfamiliar abbreviations at least once and identify any named corner or landmark.
  2. Separate an observation from an explanation you have not confirmed.
  3. End with the outcome or the specific reason another visit may be needed.
Illustrative recordA worked example

Instead of “bad by old gate,” write “Scouted the east entrance beside the former cattle gate. Thin stand in a strip roughly 20 m long; cause not confirmed.” The landmark and uncertainty are both visible.

What to avoid

Avoid silently treating an opinion as a measured result. “Looks lighter than last pass” is an observation; it is not a recorded weight or yield.
